For my concert review I chose to attend a Daniel Roth Recital, on Tuesday February 12th 2019 at 7:30 PM. It was held at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Downtown Houston. After attending that majestic recital, I was in shock on how one person can be so talented and passionate about what he does. Mr. Daniel Roth is one of the greatest music icons and organists in our era, he made his debut at the organ as the assistant to his teacher Madame Rolande Falcinelli. He proved himself to be one of the greatest and was able to succeed her as titular organist.
His elegance and confidence greatly come out and brings joy and a feeling of euphoria to anyone who is listening when he plays the magisterial instrument the Pipe Organ. The pipe organ uses air moving through pipes to produce sound, each pipe produces a single pitch, the pipes come in sets called ranks each of which has a common timbre and volume throughout the keyboard.
One of my favorite songs from the performance was Symphony III. Marcia, the whole time listening to it I was thinking to myself how inspired are these noble sounds, resplendent in their glorious surroundings, as if to draw us toward the higher realms of music and art. The ambiance captivated me in words that I cannot explain, it made me regretful that I have missed out on such great talent in the past but also ecstatic that I was introduced to a magnificent new world of music that cannot be matched in many different genres.
I was really moved and filled with emotions when I was listening to Mr. Daniel Roth play Reubke Sonata. The precise and focused state that he’s in truly shows his love and passion to play the organ and the blood, sweat and tears that he has put in throughout his life and career. The way he deals with pressure is truly inspiring knowing that any small mistake and the music produced will lose its value and would make the crowd snap out of the beautiful mood and feeling while listening to this piece of art. Keeping up with the mechanical and technical aspects of the organ must be exhausting, especially the ability to teach the brain to send signals to the hands to play and keyboard and the feet to play the pedals.
My overall experience attending my very first classical music concert that was performed by world’s greatest organists was breathtaking and also very educational. I would have never imagined that classical music could ever reached this level of greatness, the pipe organ is such a majestic instrument that is very difficult to play and not any ordinary person can be up to the task. It takes years of practice and someone to be gifted from God to be able to master this instrument. I have also learned that having a passion for the things we do will take us very far in life, especially achieving all of our goals.
Many of us start out by having a mentor and someone we look up to just like Mr. Roth did with his teacher, but there will come a time where we turn into the teachers if we put in the effort and drive. I have never felt this happy, interested and intrigued in any type of music before, I am looking forward to keep this greatness of music a part of my daily life and can’t wait to attend the next concert.
