I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai sparks debate on whether ignorance is truly bliss by focusing on the value of education. The seemingly basic idea of knowledge advancement is challenged after the horrific terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001. The Taliban, a radical Islamic group, was deemed responsible for the ambush; therefore, igniting notoriety across the globe. When the Taliban assumed control over Pakistan, where Malala resided, corruption ensued. Thus, obliterating the once peaceful way of life Malala was accustomed to.
Women are not seen as equal counterparts to men, and their right to proper schooling is overrun by the war effort. Savagery runs rampant on the streets, and violence is now the first resort. Malala has been instilled with strong values her entire life, so she soon decides enough is enough. Voicing her beliefs almost proves fatal as her enemies retaliate, and she is shot. I have a profound respect for Malala and the message she advocates.
With powerful vocabulary and help other influencers, Malala resists the ideas of her oppressors. Throughout her story, it was easy to become humbled and realize how fortunate I am. Malala states, “… we hadn’t realized how important education was until the Taliban tried to stop us. … school … wasn’t just a way of passing time, it was our future” (146). In my society, education is essential for growth.
Acquiring an education in hopes of being employed in a high-paying, steady job is admittedly difficult, but doing so has never been a question for me. I take my own opportunities for granted, considering so many have had them basically ripped away. Another aspect of the story that resonated with me, was the unfaltering support Malala received from her father, Ziauddin. Ziauddin’s selflessness and love for his daughter are conveyed through wise words such as, “I will protect your freedom, Malala.
Carry on with your dreams” (68). He holds Malala to a high standard and is willing to risk it all to guide her to success. My mother, my role model, is always there to help me find a light when I am stumbling around in the darkness. One voice can certainly make an impact, but having someone in your corner is extremely beneficial. Despite not only being the victim of a vicious assault but having to leave her home, Malala managed to accomplish something noble from an adverse situation.
Currently, Malala lives in Birmingham, England with her family. Here she continues her pursuit for change and attends an upscale school. Yet, she yearns to have her feet planted back in Pakistan. Her tenacity has not gone unnoticed as she is the youngest winner of the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize. Malala’s story is far from over, as the battle rages on.
