In the book Inside Out and Back Again, it’s contains a poem called “Saigon has fell” which tells of a story that expresses the tone of a girl and her family while enduring a war. The girl who goes by the name of Ha is on a rickety ship with her and fellow navy families trying to escape the conflict. The passage expresses the boredom and agitation that she feels on the ship as her mother’s hand held fan blows the only source of coolness. “I listen to the swish, swish of Mothers handheld fan, the whispers among adults, the bombs in the ever greater distance.”(stanza 1) This text translates to how Ha listens attentivley since there is nothing else to do. She feels as if this time period has been going on for hours and will never stop. The text also states, “Our ship dips low as the crowd runs to the left, and then to the right. This is not helping Mother. I wish they would stand still and hush.”(stanza 7)

Ha’s Mother is very seasick as the waves sway them up and down, and Ha is very annoyed that people are making her Mother feels worse than she already feels. Ha knows that she does not have the power to control the peoples actions and feels very desperate with sorrow for her Mother. This part of the story is trying to reflect the tone and visualization of desperate it’s specific word choices that contribute to the texts meaning.(Pg.69, stanza 2) “Then he adds what no one wants to hear. It’s over; Saigon is gone.” Ha stated this because she is overcome with emotion as she discovers that her childhood home is now destroyed and disintegrated. The packet, “Forgotten Ship:A Daring rescue as Saigon Fell” is related to “Inside Out and Back Again” with their similar tones. The packet portrays a time when refugees boarded helicopters but had no landing point, so ships let the refugees on. They use words that show the sailors as doubtful but yet confident. The crew on the ship knew that not all the helicopters fit so pushed some overboard to make room for more.

On page 16 it states that they were “catching babies,”(pg.16,paragraph 4) which gave the reader a suspenseful view of how they were carefully dropping their most important cargo into the arms of someone 15 feet below them. This shows how it was the absolute last resort for the refugees, their stomach probably turned and lumps in their throat probably began to appear as their child fell. (Pg.17, paragraph.2) “The airplane just fell into the water. It hit the water on it’s right-hand side. The rotors just exploded.” As the pilot plummeted into the water the sailors and refugees panicked for the future outcome of the pilots well-being. The word exploded gives the reader the visualization of fire and fire is a symbolism of death or hatred. (pg.18 paragraph 2) “…and it ended up rescuing tens of thousands of desperate Vietnamese refugees.” Desperate in most cases means that there is no other choice.
