Perseverance, dedication and strength are just a few words that describe the life Martin Luther King Jr. lead. This could be seen in his activism towards non violent protests, his constant fight for freedom, and in his unforgettable I Have A Dream speech. Now centuries later, his legacy still continues to impact a number of individuals, not only in the United States, but around the world. I can say for certain that from the instance I was old enough to comprehend the atrocities, persecution and discrimination that people of color faced I was appalled. When learning that King stood in front of the Lincoln memorial giving his famous I Have A Dream speech to his community, with the message to turn the other cheek, and to hope that “One day live in a nation where they will not be judged on the color of their skin but by the content of their character”was difficult to imagine. The admiration I have for this man is undescribable, and so throughout my life I have attempted to base my decisions on an unbiased mindset.
As a co-owner of a small family landscaping business, often times I have a hand in deciding whether or not to hire someone seeking employment. The men that come and apply to the positions usually are ones who have a limited vocabulary in the english language, and who have difficulty finding employment elsewhere. Which is why the teachings of King are crucial when interviewing the individual. Keeping in mind their character, their dedication to the work and overall, humility is key. Being aware of the power and impact I have on these people’s lives can be stressful, but knowing I have made the right choice on the morals that I grew up with sets me at ease.
I am appreciative of all the hard work King has done in order to fight for social change and equality. It has impacted deeply; not only work hard at what I do, but to be a part of something greater and help out my community. Whether that be donating my time to help out families in need or setting up a fundraisers for children’s christmas presents. Although my contributions are nowhere near as big as his movements, they show my desire tackle on social issues on a local level. As redundant and cliche as it might sound, without him the way that i live my life and the choices I make would most certainly not be the same.
It is important to understand that if one wants to show appreciation for the fight King gave up his life for, than it should expand more than just textbook knowledge; it should be implemented in everyday life.
