I am here to listen.” This is a phrase that every child wants to hear their mother say to them. I don’t think that anyone could live without having someone to call “mommy”. There is always at least one person in one’s life that influences who he/she is as a person. My mother is the one who has changed my life and made me who I am today. Determination, motivation, generosity and diligence are traits that my mother possesses that I admire.
Everyone needs an external and internal foundation of encouragement to be successful. My mom has motivated me to succeed in everything I do. She was there supporting me and doing anything she could to help me reach my goals. When I was trying out for volleyball team, she attended all of my games and was always there to cheer me on. She always said that I would become someone great one day and encouraged me to be the best I can be. My goal is to become a Neonatal Nurse. I’m in the Nursing program at my school, which is a three year program that gives me insight into the medical field and provides me with the skills needed to earn my CNA certification at the end of my senior year. My mom would listen to me ramble on and on about all I had learned that day even if she didn’t want to hear it.
She let me practice everything I learned on her whether it was taking blood pressure or just showing her the proper way to put on and take off gloves. One day I came home from school and I had just learned how to make a bed the “right way”, when you’re in the nursing home. That day my mom was doing her weekly cleaning, I was so excited about what I had learned I went to her immediately, ready to show off. “Mom can I help you make the beds?” at first she looked at me apprehensively because she knew I would slow her down. “Sure you can help me”, she replied.
Even though she let me do it I could tell she was getting restless because I was going slow but every time I asked “Am I going to slow for you?”, she always replied with “No just take your time”, she even asked me to show her how to make the bed the way I had been taught. My mom pushed me to take advantage of every opportunity I was offered, which got me involved in the Hofstra Medical Pipeline program in my school. It’s a summer program, for students that know they want to pursue a career in the medical field. Even though having these programs available to me is great, it comes with a lot of stress. When my mom sees how stressed I am she never yells at me to just get over it or give me a, “life’s hard” lecture. Instead she takes me shopping, or out to eat. By doing this I am able to enjoy myself and not have to worry about the stress.
Since I was little, my mom has worked very hard to support our family. She has had to sacrifice many things in life and would do anything for me and my sisters. Sometimes it’s hard seeing her struggle, and she always tries to put on a happy face. I can tell that it’s hard for her, but she pushes through it and does the best she can with what she has. She has overcome many obstacles in life and doesn’t let anything stop her.
The money she does make she is willing to just spend it all on us, and hardly gets anything for herself. I appreciate what she does, one of the main reasons I got a job, was to be able to help out my mom. I can help pay for my cell phone bill, help buy groceries and offer anything I can because she deserves it. My mom always says that we deserve the best, but actually she deserves the best and more. I hope to grow up and become the best person I can be because of her. I want to be successful so it is worth her sacrifice.
