There are two main personality/character in Two Kinds story; another side, there is only one main character in A & P story. Sammy is the main character in the A & P story. In the story, he is very romantic and cynical. Suyuan believes that anyone can do anything if want to be in America. That is why she gave this idea into her daughter brain, and in every step she tries her daughter to become as a famous person.
At the beginning, Jing-mei also believes that she can reach any goal with hard work. She tries to follow her mother words. When she tries to do it, she can’t success in several times. Then she disappoints about it. “And then I saw what seemed to be the prodigy side of me a face I had never seen before I looked my reflection, blinking so that I could see more clearly. The girl starting back at me was angry, powerful.” (Tan 1265)In this line describes about Jeng-mei bad situation when she gets fail in few times. After that, she tries to refuses her mother’s desire through her in every time.
Another story A & P Sammy is the major character as well. He works at grocery supermarket as a check out cashier. He is an arguable person who describes about three girl’s bathing suits. According to M. Gilbert Porter, “On a shopping errand, three teenaged girls in bathing suits come into the A & P which employs Sammy.” (1155) Actually, he is very interested in them; because his youngness. He feels very bad and emotion when his manager Lengel charges against the girl’s bathing suits. Then he tries to protect them but finally he can’t protect them. At the end of argument, he decides to quit the job.

There are six characters in the Two Kinds story. There are also six characters in the A & P story. In the every step she faces so hard situation to be proved her mother’s dream. In this story, the mother completely pushes the daughter to get the mother’s dream. Her mother really wanted to prove that immigrant people are more intelligent than American. On the other hand, Jing-Mai tries to say her to mother that she is not a talent, genius, extraordinary and intelligent. So, she won’t be able to prove as a genius person.
In A & P short story, author John Updike writes about three young girls, Sammy (Store Clerk) and Lengel (Store Manager). Once three girls went to the grocery store, and they walk around. And they do not wear normal dress, they wear bathing suit (clothes). After seeing them the store manager doesn’t want to allow them in the store. It is against the store policy. After that he informs to Sammy about them. Sammy refuses his order, and because of it he does not want to go out them from store. He knows one girl of them. Her name is Queenie, and she is group leader.
That is why he does not want to disrespect them, and upset them. Then it goes to conflict between Lengel and Sammy. Then it goes to problem relationship between Sammy and Lengel. Finally, Sammy quits the job. In these both stories, the narrators are Jing Mai and Sammy. In the Two Kinds story, finally Jing Mai realizes that she did not do right which was her mother against, and she found that her mother was right. In another story A & P, the end of the day Sammy realized that it was not right him quitting job.
In the stories, main words about conflict between teenage age and adult age. For instance, it is conflict between mother (Mature woman) and daughter (teenage girl); and in another story it is conflict between Lengel (Adult) and Sammy (Teenage boy). There are no any character as an example about parents in the A & P story, but only mention in here that Lengel knows Sammy’s parents. In the Two Kinds story, mother wants to make her daughter as a famous person. She always forces, pressure her to do it; but Jing-mei can’t do what her mother wants through her, and she fails in several times. It is really contrast between mother and daughter. In these stories, Sammy and Jing-mei characters are inspired a lot. They are reality person.
