In the novel “Native Son” written by Richard Wright, it’s about a poor young boy living in a small room with his family. His mother will usually put a lot of pressure on him because he’s the oldest and he should be working to provide for them. The society he lived was a racial world , white people had their own separate space and so did black people. Bigger Thomas had to go work the Dalton’s which were a white family. Once he arrives there for him everything seem so uncomfortable and strange because he knew this wasn’t his world but there’s nothing to do about it. Bigger had been growing a big hatred on them that makes him do the wrong choices in life.
He starts to reveal himself but he still would be doubting himself in the things he chooses do to. This racial society affected Bigger a lot that made him lose himself. His story definitely connects to today’s society because many people still judge others for their race and also poverty.
Starting off, Bigger shows hatred against White folks because in the way they treated him. In the book the author states”It’s funny how the white folks treated us, ain’t it? It better be funny, Gus said. Maybe they right in not wanting us to fly, Bigger said. Cause if i took a plane up I’d take a couple of bombs along and drop em as sure as hell…”(Wright 17)In this scene Bigger and his friends were looking up at a plane that some white men were flying and in their minds they think if he could fly it they will definity throw bombs at them for the things they make them go through.

The author also states “The silence irked Bigger; he was anxious to do something to evade looking so squarely at this problem… Let’s play ‘white’ Bigger said, referring to a game of play acting in which he and his friend imitated the ways and manners of white folks.”(Wright 17) This shows how hatred is growing in Bigger and also his friends but in Bigger’s mind he feels a need to do something unlike his friends just don’t do anything about it. It shows how white people show themselves off at black people buy flying planes or hanging posters, but nothing makes it better but full hatred towards them.
In our current society doesn’t matter the difference race or your culture you will stay deal with poverty and be judged just like in the book. For example, Bigger has be judged by white men as a dumb and uneducated person that wouldn’t touch a white girl. In the book the author states “I don’t own any property. Nasuh, Bigger said. Aw he’s a dumb cluck. He doesn’t know anything, one of the men whispered in a voice loud enough for for Bigger to hear”.(Wright 213) In this scene Bigger was acting dumb so the men can’t suspect anything about him and they actually end up believing him because all they see him is as a dumb negro that doesn’t’ have a education. Today’s society you still deal with this type of criticism because white people always feel like they bigger than people that are in a lower category. Not to Only black people but to Hispanic people too.
Therefore , In Bigger’s society the policemen care more about what happens to white people than negroes. In the book it states “They felt that it was much easier and safer to rob their own people, for they knew that white policemen never really searched diligently for negroes who committed crimes against other negroes”.(Wright 14) In this scene Bigger was mentioning how they can rob anything from their kind and police wouldn’t even bother to come help them. In today’s society is the same thing , immigrants are terrified to call police officers because they think they are going to be deported and white policemen would actually do it ,ignoring the fact that they are probably a victim or being robbed , they will still take them.
In conclusion, Bigger lives in a racial society because in the way the white society had treated them and changed everything making black people feel less of themselves. Made it hard to look for job and not getting the same security as the others. You can connect this book to our society because nothing has really changed and there’s few people that go through the same situations and by that they can produce another Bigger thomas.
