In life, things happen. Sometimes they affect one positively, and other times they impact one negatively. We have all dealt with our fair share of negative impacts, but in the end, positive and negative come together to make us who we are as people. In both The Metamorphosis (1915), and The Color of Paradise (1999), the main character faces a big problem in which they act positively or negatively to. And The Encounter (1944) is a piece of art that shows positive versus negative, or opposite sides conflicting. Even though all three pieces are very different, there are similar in the way they show the positives and negatives of life.

In the book The Metamorphosis (1915), written by Franz Kafka, the main character of the book, Gregor Samsa, wakes up and discovers he has transformed into a huge insect. Gregor acts neither negatively nor positively towards the situation, but goes with the flow. He does at some point slightly worry about what his family will do without his income. They had only saved a little bit of money. “…enough to support the family for one year, or at the most two, but that’s all there was” (21). He’s worried because he and his father can no longer work, the family will become poor. His father seems like he is the negative person in the story because he is constantly rude and negative towards Gregor. His sister is the more positive character, as she tries to take care of him and keep her parents happy, while having a bright outlook on it all.

On the other hand, Majid Majidi’s movie The Color of Paradise (1999), casts a very positive light on the characters. In the movie, Muhammad and his family must deal with the difficulty of his blindness, and despite it, they manage to stay optimistic, for the most part. Muhammad stays optimistic and keeps busy when his dad does not come to pick him up, for example, talking with his teacher and discovering birds and other nature. His family, like his cousins and his grandmother, also stay optimistic and shows him unconditional love despite his handicap, playing with him and treating him regularly.. The only person who acts negatively on Muhammad’s blindness is his father. His father did not want to pick him up, and even asked if he could stay at the school for the summer. He did not want to deal with the hardship of it, especially after the death of his significant other.

The main themes in the book and movie can both be seen in The Encounter, M.C Escher’s piece of art. He shows two man-like characters, light and dark, that could represent opposite views, that are moving in a circular pattern, until they come together to shake hands. When they do shake hands, they merge together, which combines the positives and negatives. This goes to show that positive and negative can both impact you in different ways, but all come together in the end, and by doing so, show that positive and negative are both learning lessons.

The Metamorphosis and The Color of Paradise together show that positive and negative impacts come together, which is implemented in The Encounter. When both negative and positive impacts come together, it shows that although they both affect you, they shape who you are as a person.
