Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a social activist who played a big role in the American civil rights movement in the 1950’s. He was unfortunately assassinated for his beliefs that all men were created equal. Dr. King fought hard for the quality of African Americans through peaceful protest. It was through his efforts that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights act of 1965 were pushed through. He peacefully lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the March on Washington. That is why our nation celebrates him every year. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day has been a federal holiday since 1986. Dr. King was born in Atlanta in 1929 on January the 15th. He was named after his father, Michael King, but his father changed his name after a trip to Germany, which taught him to honor Martin Luther, the German reformer. A little known fact about Martin Luther King Jr. is that he was part-Irish, as his paternal great-grandfather was Irish. Martin Luther King Jr. had a big family with many siblings, who were all raised by their father to be proud and fearless. Dr. King’s first firsthand experience with segregation is when he and his childhood friend started to attend elementary school. His friend was white, and attended the white schools, but Dr. King was black and had to attend the African American schools. He lost his friend as a result.
Throughout his teen years, he was resentful of the fact that segregation was accepted and he did not agree with many of the Christian philosophies that segregation was a fundamental. It is this unrest that spurred his passion for education. He chose to enter the ministry at 18 years old. He later got his bachelor of arts in sociology. He gave many sermons on social protest with the ultimate goal of serving humanity. He ultimately obtained his doctorate from Boston University after writing his dissertation called “A Comparison Of The Conceptions Of God In The Thinking Of Paul Tillich and Henry Nelson Wieman.” The first major protest was the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955, where Rosa Parks was arrested after not giving up her seat on a city bus. King led a protest soon after, which lasted for 385 days. It was during this time that Dr. King’s house was bombed. He also led marches for the right for black citizens to vote, as well as for desegregation, labor rights and basic civil rights, all of which ended up being included in the United States civil rights act of 1964. He faced opposition on all sides and was even arrested once after protesting the treatment of African Americans in Birmingham. In conclusion, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was an amazing man. He over came amazing odds and made a real change on the face of the American nation.
