In today´s society everything is based off of religion. Both The Handmaid’s Tale, which was written between 1980 and 1986, and Persepolis, which was also written between 2000 and 2002, allows the reader to read about a society based off of religion. Both literatures shows custom laws. They make the the reader to think about what could happen and what did happen to the society at the time both works were written.
Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis is about the Islamic Revolution in Iran. The novel was written in the time after this revolution took place. It was a challenge for her to write about the revolutionary events that took place in Iran while she was an adolescent. Persepolis allows the reader to be able to engage and learn about the struggles in Iran. In this time period the novel described Iran as an unforgiving country and show no mercy to people who stood up and protested against their beliefs and ideas.Women were treated differently from men.
Women do not get any recognition because by society because they did not have that many rights or freedom. Satrapi also wanted to make her experience living in Iran something educational and that would not have happened if she did not grow up. Satrapi wrote Persepolis as an autobiographical novel in a time of freedom and freedom was something that really was not allowed. The novel gives the reader facts about the revolution from a point of view that was rarely ever shown before. The novel also elaborates by showing the reader the effects a religion can have on a society.

Conversely, in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale novel was written differently. Atwood wrote the novel during a period where many feminist groups started to form and grow all over the society.During that time period women were actually accepted and were seen as equals to men.Women´s rights such as abortions were beginning to be a topic for women. People in the society were free and was allowed to think and have any type o belief that they wanted. However, the conservative people had very strong influences and put major pressure on women´s right in the United States.
The Handmaid’s Tale is written in a first person narrative. Offred is the person that is mostly telling the reader the experiences she is going through during the Gilead period, but she also gives the reader insight of the time before Gilead in flashbacks. In the novel Offred talks about her life and how she had a husband and a child. The reader will later learn that Offered child had to be taken away for her serve her country by having children for the Commander and his wife. The Gilead society is completely made up on religious biblical aspects. Men were allowed to be unfaithful to their wives and force women into having their children shows how this was a biblical link in the novel.If a handmaid was not able to conceive for her Commander as a punishment she would be killed. The blame would be placed on the handmaid if they were not able to conceive for their commander because back them men felt as if nothing could ever be wrong with them.
In conclusion, both Persepolis and The Handmaid’s Tale reflects on their religious society in different time periods. However, there is one similarity found in the way Persepolis and The Handmaid’s Tale both novels showed their readers what it is like to live in a society that is completely based on Islamic and Christian beliefs and how they think living with those rules is the best way to rule a society. Unfortunately, because of those rules women’s rights are almost non-existent in both societies. The novels causes the readers to think about their religion and how it is displayed in their society.
