Benjamin Franklin once wrote, “Better done is better than well-said.” It is true that saying something well can be powerful; however, it is better to engage in actions rather than talk. Benjamin Franklin is right because getting something done means accomplishing a goal, actions speak louder than words, and because a person’s actions give power to words.
Instead of talking, working towards the goal is better because in the end, the goal will be achieved. Many people set goals for themselves; however, they do not achieve their goals. For example, President Obama stated during his presidential speech that he would protect the middle class. Saying this, he got a lot of votes from the middle class, which is the class that most of the people of the United States is in. However, did he protect the middle class? The answer is no.
Things got worse for the middle class. Due to Obamacare and change to the common core system in schools, the taxes of the middle class increased drastically. Obamacare did help the lower class, but the class he promised to protect took a blow. President Obama also promised that he would withdraw the soldiers from Iraq; now, not only are they in Iraq, but they are spread out across the whole Middle Eastern area. President Obama’s speech was well-said because it lead most of the middle class plus the people with family members who are soldiers to vote for him; however, he has not gotten his goals accomplished, and he made things he promised to make better worse.
No matter how powerful words are, actions speak louder than words. For example, this can be seen in students. Students say they are going to work hard from now on, some actually do; however, most students don’t. The ones who actually do start working often go outside to hang out with their friends, and they manage their time efficiently. Whereas, the students who only say they will work hard procrastinate, cram, and they don’t manage their time efficiently. Instead of talking, just working towards goals and getting something accomplished will speak for itself.
People will think, “Wow, he did start studying and working hard.” Therefore, instead of talking, just get to work because actions speak louder than words.
Many people argue that words are stronger than actions. They point to Martin Luther King Jr’s “I have a dream” speech as an example. It is true that his words were powerful and motivated many people; however, the main reason that his words were so powerful were because of his actions. The leadership he had and the things he had done backed up his words to make them powerful. If the person was just a civilian that no one knew about, the person wouldn’t have gave the same impact that Martin Luther King Jr. gave. Therefore, a person’s actions give power to his words.
“Better done is better than well-said,” and “walk your talk” are both phrases saying talk is nothing. What Benjamin Franklin said is true because instead of talking, walking the talk will get goals accomplished. No matter how well spoken the words are, actions speak louder than words. Finally, a person’s actions are the things that give a person’s words power.
