The book we read was “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. This book had a big impact due to its enchanting tale of a child growing up in a small Alabaman town during the 1930’s. Part of that tale includes statements about the prejudice and political themes of that era. It’s very interesting to see how the main characters adapt and learn from the ongoing situations of the town. The main situation is the ongoing trial of Tom Robinson against Bob Ewell.
Throughout the story we became aware of the Trial. During this the vibe of the entire town is not on in Toms favor. It’s not the town likes Bob Ewell and his family per-say. Tom’s skin color was a playing factor in the believability of Bob’s story. For example, Atticus’s statement “As you grow older, you’ll see white men cheat black every day of your life” showed what he knew from the beginning. The cards were stacked in Bobs favor.
Another example of social injustices in the town was the black people’s church. The church’s description made it seem dilapidated and old.Scout described it as an “…ancient paint-peeled frame building…” making it seem run down. It was never specifically stated that the blacks had to go to a separate church but it was definitely implied. The building was far out of town, old, and given little support. The lack of hymn books among other things showed how much support the church could possibly get from what they had.
A recurring theme throughout this part of the story would be their educations or lack there-of. The children asked calpurnia about the way she talks when around them compared to the way she talks around the people around her church. She answers by referring to their lack of a proper education and their want to learn. “They can’t read” was stated as an answer to him asking why they don’t have hymn books. “You’re not gonna change any of them by talkin’ right, they’ve got to want to learn themselves…” provides an example of their way of life and state of mind. They’ve never been taught or given a proper education so they work with what they have.
The late Ms. Lee was a true icon of her time. She made bold statements about the fallacies happens during that era. The book ties together an amazing story and some interesting values to be learned. Especially with Tom Robinson’s trial. It helped many people recognize the wrongs they’ve made and work to fix them.
