Lord of the Flies by William Golding and 1984 by George Orwell represent the authority of power and control over all its people, it also compares fear and contrast with a completely different kind of fear. Each of the novels show green-eye monsters and hate towards the authorities which led to chaos. The novel the Lord of the Flies is about 20 boys who are stranded on a deserted island without any adult supervision after their plane crashes. Ralph then becomes the leader over all the other boys on the island because he holds the conch shell and the others agree to follow his rules.
The book 1984 takes place in the dictorial state of Oceania after World War II. This powerful state is under full control of their authorities known as The Party. All the people are watch twenty-four hours a day with surveillance cameras watching every move they do throughout the community. In the Lord of the Flies Ralph makes himself the leader and uses his power on his fellow friends in an effort to manage an organized community. He gives each of the boys a job to carry out while they are on the island. Ralph puts one of the other boys named Jack in charge of making a fire and make sure that it keeps under control. Ralph’s power is expressed when Jack leaves the fire unattended as a ship passes by the island. “Ralph pushes piggy to one side “I was man and you are traveling to make what I said” (Golding 70). Once Ralph saw the ship from afar and realizes that the fire was at a low coal and becomes angry. He then pushes piggy aside again and tells Jack that he needs to follow his order. Ralph knew it important to maintain the fire so they could get the attention of the crewman on the ship, and this was their chance to get off the island, but his plan fell through. He then uses his power to make sure that they get off the island safely.
Similarly, in 1984 the authorities which is known as The Party has power over all the people. They have surveillance cameras placed all around the area including everyone’s home to remind the people that they need to obey all the rules of The Party. In the beginning of 1984 the information is explained as “the black-mustachio’d face gazed down from every commanding corner there was one on the house forepart instantly opposite. Large Brother is watching you the caption said, while the dark eyes looked deep into his own” (Orwell 2). Large Brother is the leader of The Party and the complete dictator of Oceania. These postings are used to remind the people that they are being watched all of the time. The information used in the communities represents the power of Big Brother and The Party. This information is posted everywhere so the citizens are forced to look at their dictator in the face.
In both books The Lord of the Flies and 1984 represent a strong authority with a powerful dictator opinion over both of the communities. In the Lord of the Flies, the boys are stranded on a deserted island and go frightened of what else could be on the island. The boys saw a parachute land on top of the mountain on the island. They believed it to be some kind of animal. In 1984 the main character Winston Smith, faces the fear of being caught by The Party for his rebel Acts of the Apostles throughout the book. In the Lord of the Flies the boys are afraid of a scary object that was attached to the parachute that floated on top of the mountain. There is two boys that are paying attention to the fire when they spot what they believed was an animal, and they ran scared to Ralph for help. “They became motionless and gripped in each other’s weaponries four unwinking eyes aimed two oral cavities open” (Golding 98).
The boys are around the age of six to twelve years old. The shock of seeing an unrecognizeable object with their own eye brought the boys to believe that it was an animal. This really puts a scare to the boys of the unknown island. The boys are also afraid of what else could be on the island and what the “beast” that the two boys saw. The boys are scared because there is no grownups to protect them from the animals and fear what might happen to them. In 1984 the people fear their authorities and the cruel penalties for not following the law. The Party highly controls the law for all the people to obey. Winston meets Julia and they have to run into secret to see each other because of their sexual relationship, because it is not allowed in the Oceania.
