Juuls are a new form of e-cigarette intended to help smokers quit their bad habits, but juul use has become very popular among adolescents. Juuls contain 5% nicotine in one pod which is equal to one pack of cigarettes. Since juuls have a large amount of nicotine in them it is very easy to become addicted. Juuling is very harmful to your body and can cause many health problems for frequent users.
Juuls are very new so researchers are unaware of the long term effect but they believe that it is very similar to the effect of smoking cigarettes because they contain many of the same chemicals as cigarettes. One of the most common effects of juuling “popcorn lung.” Popcorn lung is condition that that causes inflammation of the lungs and large amounts of scarring causing the restriction of airways which leads to the inability to breath.
The symptoms of popcorn lung are similar to those of COPD and the damage is irreversible. The chemicals in juuls can also cause the brain to have trouble developing and will lead to adolescents brains not fully developing and stunting their growth. The nicotine that is present in juuls has been known to cause increased heart and inflammation of blood vessels which can become heart disease.

Although juuls do not contain as many of the chemicals in cigarettes that are known to cause cancer, there is still of large threat of lung cancer to frequent juulers. It is also very possible that people who use juuls will transition to smoking cigarettes.
The consequences of juuling are not limited to only health issues. Juuling can also get you in trouble with the police and if found on a college campus can cause serious repercussions. Minors that are found with any form of juul or e-cigarettes will be fined $500 as first offenders. Anyone found on school grounds with a juul will receive a serious suspension.
Colleges are also trying to place restrictions on tobacco products on the campuses. Students who are caught with juuls on campus may have to appear in front of a council of their peers to defend their place in the schools and they will decide on their future at that college.
I have asked my fellow classmates why they juul and have received many responses. Some say the juul helps them relax, this can be very troubling because it causes people to become reliant and it makes it much harder to quit. There are much better ways to relieve stress and relax for example hanging out with friends.
Juul uses tasty flavors like mango and fruit to attract users, luckily the FDA has been cracking down on this in recent months stopping the sale of flavor that attract children. This will help but it’s only half the battle. We need to educate our children and peers on the effects and let them know what it’s can do to them.
