“The true face of smoking is disease, death, and horror – not the glamour and sophistication the pushers in the tobacco industry try to portray.” (Byrnes). This was told by a very wise man named David Byrne. This statement causes us to think about how tobacco really impacts our lives. Moreover, tobacco is an uprising issue in our everyday lives. Numerous students and adults chew or smoke tobacco, which causes many people to pass away at a young age. Furthermore, people throw their cigarette buds into the creeks and woods, which causes many animals to eat and then die from these harmful substances. The less tobacco in our world, the better lives people live.

Tobacco is a very harmful mixture of chemicals, which we consume into our bodies. It also causes cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, diabetes, and COPD, which also includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Tobacco also increases the risk of tuberculosis, certain eye diseases, and problems of the immune system, including rheumatoid arthritis. Numerous people die from smoking or chewing tobacco and we need to be more aware of the consequences from it. But, it doesn’t just harm our bodies, it harms the environment too.

Animals and many other living organisms are harmed from the deadly chemicals that reside in tobacco. Numerous animals mistake cigarettes and chewing tobacco for food, which they proceed to consume. Because of the consumption of tobacco, these animals unfortunately perish. On the other hand, for plants and similar organisms, the tobacco is absorbed into the soil. But, the plants receive their nutrients from the soil and they also, unfortunately, perish. Moreover, the smoke and ash from cigarettes are blown up and away into the air, which then impacts the air quality. Air quality is very important in our world because its what we breath and we need to pay more attention to it. Moreover, the expenses of tobacco are also a huge issue for our country.

The clean up of tobacco is very costly for our government. The state of California spends more than $9 billion per year on tobacco-related medical costs. Which they also lose another $8.5 billion per year due to the result of reduced work productivity. But, this happens because of the increase in employee smoke breaks, illness, and death. Numerous people are also homeless and poor due to the addiction to tobacco. Furthermore, a pack of cigarettes at a minimum is $5.25 and assuming a smoker smokes one pack a day in one year’s time they are going to spend approximately $1,916.25. This is another reason why there is so much poverty in America; because there is so much tobacco use, when there shouldn’t be any.

There are numerous reason to veto the idea of using tobacco. It harms numerous people and their bodies. Furthermore, because of people being irresponsible and throwing their cigarettes in the forests, numerous plants and animals have passed away. It is also extremely costly for our country to pay for all of the cleanups in our cities. We should think less about now and more about the future. What world will our children grow up in? Will it be decaying and dying, or thriving? The actions we take now will greatly affect how our world is in the future. “Tobacco is the only industry that produces products to make huge profits and at the same time damage the health and kill their consumers.”(Chan).
