Good afternoon teacher and my fellow friends, my name is Shannon. Today I would like to talk about don’t text while driving. This presentation is about why people shouldn’t text while driving.

In this developed era, we increasingly rely on smartphones and mobile electronic devices. Especially our phones are so ingrained in our daily lives that it is difficult to put down the phone and focus on other things, especially when driving. On the way to the destination, we will want to reply the messages or answer the phone, because this has become our instinct. Unfortunately, in terms of all the benefits we get from technology, using the phone while driving is very dangerous. Many states have taken steps to discourage usage of using mobile phones while driving.

There have been more than 280,000 road accident during the first six month in 2019. Bukit Aman Investigation and Traffic Enforcement director, Datuk Azisman Alias said that between January to June 2019, 281,527 road accident have been reported to all country. This increase 2.5% from 2018. Therefore, anyone can become victim of road accident. If texting while driving is so dangerous, people should think about the consequences before engaging it.

What counts at “ Texting And Driving “. This is one of many behaviors under the umbrella of ” distracted driving “, which also includes actions such as texting, reading emails, using social media such as Facebook or Instagram on mobile phone, makeup, and even eating while operating a motor vehicle. If you do something that will keep your attention away from road, even you feel that you control the car, you will still be distracted. This will not only get you trouble with the law, but also put you and other people in danger so driver need to be aware of the danger and keep attention on the road.

Before everything else, there are three main types of distraction which is visual, manual, and cognitive distraction. Visual distraction means take your eyes off the road. Even five seconds can get your attention off the road for texting while driving. Texting message attract the driver’s attention for the longest time. When the driver receive or texting a conversation, their attention will take off the road and did not look at the road. If they glance at the road occasionally and more attention is on their phone, then a car accident is bound to happen.

Second, manual distraction mean take hand off the sterling. Manual distraction is the second cause with a high risk that led to road accident. For example, fixing his or her hair, holding a cup of coffee, changing the radio station and also texting. It’s not hard to imagine that how the driver manage to hold the phone and drive the car. They will hold the phone in one hand and drive with the free hand. When they typing with one or both hands, this can lead to incorrect frequency or delayed of wheel correction. This will affect their control of the vehicle and usually busy drivers are slower to respond to danger. As a result, the driver’s attention is on the manual task, not on the road.

Next, the third distraction is cognitive distraction. Cognitive distraction means take mind off the road. Cognitive distraction occurs when the driver turn his or her attention to another mentally demanding task. Using a hand-free cellphone calls and voice-activated electronic system almost is the purely cognitive distraction. People often think that they can do two things in the same time. For example, some people think that they can talk on the hand-free phone while driving.
