Should Public College Be Tuition-Free?
This topic has been a very controversial topic lately with some of the presidential candidates. Should college tuition be free? There are a lot of opinions and facts to take into account. In my opinion, college as a whole shouldn’t be free. Why? College campuses are very expensive to run with the academic builds, dorm room buildings, meal plans, and all the utility costs that add up and not to mention professors and other college campus staffs who are already deserve more than what they receive now. However, I do believe academic tuition at public institutions should be free. Students can choose to live off campus and receive higher education and not worry about going into debt. Presidential candidate Bernier Sanders wrote an article in the New York Times in which he explains his beliefs for free education. In the article, Sanders talks about the history of public education costs. He believed an education should be available to everyone, whether they are financially capable or not. The United States has the highest college tuition in the world and under Sanders plan, the state governments would be covering the money that a public college would receive for tuition. Our tax dollars has been paying our local pre-k to high school since the 1800s, so I think it is time to progress the nation and our economy by making higher education a necessity for ambitious students and intelligent students. Ultimately, that is the kind of country most people would live in it. College education does have a value, but so does the impact it has on not only our communities but also in our country as whole. With more educated population, we can became a better nation, I know it will never get rid of crime, poverty and unemployment but I do believe it will reduce these problems. Public college tuition should be free to anyone who is dedicated to educating themselves because at the rate the current cost is going, it is unaffordable and unreasonably difficult to repay.
