Throughout the past 7 years the total number of arrests has averaged around 13 million arrests a year. Out of all of those arrested the total number of arrests that were drug related averaged around 1-2 million. That means 1 out of 6 crimes are drug related. Out of each drug related crime that is committed around 82 percent of them are for possession. And the other 18 percent is for manufacturing and sale. Imagine a world with less crime, it’s crazy how many crimes are drug related. We could reduce our nation’s 2 million crimes a year if we’re able to control our nation’s drug problem. It is really hard to control the drug problem because the top 3 drugs are constantly changing and are constantly causing different problems.

Drug addicts have a stronger tendency to commit crimes because they need money to help finance their problem. Not all but many drug users are desperate to get a drug “fix” so they commit minor crimes, but those crimes can sometimes lead to bigger ones. Drugs not only have an impact on crimes it also has an effect on society, the number of Americans with aids, and the number deaths drug related.

Our society is very judgmental and has a list of things that are to be acceptable and what’s not. Drug abuse also has an economic impact on society, every year there is around $67 billion dollars spent on drug abuse. This includes costs related to crime, drug abuse treatment, medical costs and time lost from work and social welfare programs. Many people use drugs as an escape or to fit in because they are different. If the world wasn’t so grueling less people would use.

Each year 1.2 million people are infected with AIDS. Of that 1.2 billion 123,235 adults with AIDS in the US got the disease from injection drug use. Also 47 percent of women diagnosed with AIDS are injection drug users. That is nearly half, and that half could be prevented. If more people were educated about the risks of drugs and how they can lead to greater problems, I believe less people would use them. If the adults with drug induced AIDS sought help they could prevent spreading AIDS to more people. Many people with AIDS are unknowing of their disease and are passing in on. With eliminating drugs we could reduce the death rates also, not only AIDS related deaths but all drug related deaths.

Roughly 2.5 million people die in the US. Out of that 2.5 million around 300,000 are drug related. That number does not include the number of people that die who are stuck in- between or are in the drug wars. No one should have to die due to overdose of any drug. And every year this number is increasing as is the number of users. Every day in the US, 2,500 youth (12 to 17) abuse a prescription pain reliever for the first time. Many of those kids who experiment with the drugs may get addicted and have greater problems later.

Drugs have a huge effect on our nation’s society. It has a great deal with the number of crimes committed each year, the number of deaths, and the number of persons infected with AIDS. Our country will never solve the drug problem, but if nothing is done to control it these numbers will keep going up. Just think of the numbers of drugs used each year and think of the upcoming generation and how it will affect them. More people will use drugs and more people will get addicted and it will just seem normal to use drugs soon.
